Since October 17 till November 12 in the Center of Documents of International Organizations of the National Library of Belarus is open a subject book exhibition "The United Nations Organization in the modern world" devoted to the 60-th anniversary of the foundation of UNO.
On the exhibition are presented more than 100 documents (books, mimeograph materials, periodicals, and brochures) from the collections of the National Library of Belarus in Belarusian, Russian and English. The exposition consists of the following divisions: general information on ONU, maintenance of peace and international security, economic and social development, human rights, UNO and Belarus.
Most of us have already heard of the ONU activity connected with the maintenance of peace or providing of humanitarian aid. However, a lot of other aspects of its activity, which influence our life, are not well known. These activities are jointly fulfilled by more than 30 organizations connected with ONU, which compose a system of the United Nations Organization . Every day the United Nations Organization and other organizations of its system fulfil the work on maintenance of the human rights, protection of environment, fight against diseases and reduction of the scale of poverty. United Nations institutions develop standards and rules of safe and effective air connection, promote development and improvement of telecommunications and consumer protection. The United Nations Organization is a initiator of international campaign on the fight against drug traffic and terrorism. Working in all regions of the world, the United Nations Organization and its institutions render assistance to refugees, realize programs of mine cleaning, help increasing the volume of production of food, and play the leading role in the fight against AIDS.
In September 2000 members of the United Nations Organization, including 147 heads of States and Governments summoned in New York on purpose to elaborate an international agenda for the beginning of the new century. This meeting resulted in the adoption of the Declaration of the Millenium, where are presented purposes valued in terms of quantity, which must be reached in seven key areas: peace, security and disarmament; development and eradication of the poverty; protection of our general environment; human rights, democracy and good governance; protection of vulnerable; satisfaction of particular needs of Africa; fortification of the United Nations Organization.
The United Nations Organization was founded on October 24, 1945 by 51 countries. Their intention was to save the peace by the way of development of international cooperation and providing of collective security. Today 191 countries, it means almost all countries of the world, are the members of UNO.
Becoming members of UNO, States undertake commitments exposed in the Charter of the United Nations Organization, which is an international agreement reflecting general principles of international relations. According to the Charter, UNO pursues 4 purposes: maintenance of international peace and security, development of friendship and good relations among nations, realization of international cooperation on purpose to solve international problems and contribute to respect of the human rights, and also to be an international coordination center.
The United Nations Organization is not a world government and doesn't adopt any laws. However, it provides means, which help regulating international conflicts and elaborating a policy in questions that touch us all. All the States members of UNO - big and small, rich and pour, with different politic and social systems - possess the right to express their opinion and take part in vote in the frames of this process.
The anniversary of coming into force of the Charter of the United Nations Organization - October 24 1945 - is celebrated as the Day of the United Nations Organization since the year 1948. It is traditionally celebrated all around the world by the way of organization of conferences, discussions and exhibitions, devoted to achievements and purposes of the Organization. In the year 1971 the General Assembly recommended that all States members of UNO celebrate it as a national feast (Resolution 2782 (XXVI)).
Belarus took part in process of creation of UNO. Our country was in the number of 51 States founders of the United Nations Organization. This honorable right witnesses the great role which played Belarusian people in the defeat of fascism in the years of the World War II, and respect for the memory of millions Belarusian citizens who sacrificed their lives and survived in the fight for liberty and for the right of Belarusian people to exist as a nation with their own history, culture and the future.
Today in Belarus function 11 program representatives, agencies and organization of the UNO system: United Nations Development Program (UNDP), Department Of Public Information, UNO Child Fund, International Labor Organization, Department of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, ONU united program on HIV/AIDS, International Monetary Fund, World Bank, International Finance Corporation
